Causes of Depression
Depression can occur due to a number of causes, and among these is the prevalence of stress. Mental stress is the prime cause of this state of mind along with one's genes. When problems and stressful situations get in the way of one’s normal mindset, this subsequently triggers the mood of depression. Depending on the genetic make-up of a sufferer, he or she may experience it longer and more deeply than others. And because of this reason, some people become more prone to this mood than others.
Another cause of depression is the experience of emotional trauma. Life-changing events such as death or an accident can instantly trigger this mental state. The upheaval of a home or a divorce can also be associated with emotional trauma. Some experiences or failure may also pile up and incite depression in some people. Manic depression can occur to those especially prone to it, and it may be necessary for such person to undergo treatment from a trained psychiatrist.
Signs to Look For
A person experiencing depression may show a number of signs. Listlessness, anxiety and unwillingness to participate in some activities are a few of these indications. Seclusion or the presence of little or no friends can also signify depression, particularly when the person stays alone at home and does not have any visitors. Other signs of depression include sleepless nights, loss of appetite and inactivity.
Aside from these signs, one should look for other unusual clues from a person possibly suffering from depression. With the experience of this state of mind, there are many ways in which people try to compensate from depression. Some people show normal behavior despite having such condition without any outward signs or manifestations. In some cases, the alleviation of the cause of stress can treat depression although in most cases, help and guidance from professionals and peer groups may be necessary. Professionals are the ones that can actually treat those suffering from this condition although mild cases resolve themselves after some time.
