How to Cope With Depression

Let there be no doubt that depression is a serious mental illness that sometimes requires months and years of treatment on the road to a cure
.  Millions of Americans across the United States are affected by depression each and every year.  The situation becomes worse because only one third of those who suffer depression ever get treated.  Depression has always been classified as a mental affliction.   Therefore, many Americans choose not to be placed into that category.  Instead of being considered mentally ill, people try to manage the problem themselves.  Depression is more common- place than you might think and it will not go away on its own. 

Why do people get depression?  The answer can get very complicated because you have to take many factors into consideration.  Depression can be a long story because of many issues. Lets examine some of the most notorious.  Brain chemicals being out of proportion contributes strongly to depression.  But what causes the imbalance?  The causes can be genetic, mental or even come from the environment.  There are those inflicted that never really determine what spurned their depression.  If diagnosis of another serious medical condition happens, sometimes people become depressed.

Another cause of depression can be the emotional pain felt after losing a loved one.  In many cases the loss can be very traumatic. Depression often follows sexual or physical abuse, or emotional attacks.  When people abuse drugs and/or alcohol the result is often depression.  People's mental states are fragile.  If exposed to the wrong pressures, depression can result.  Depression is often passed along in the DNA. Those afflicted have a family history of the disease .  Many prescription drugs can cause depression.  High blood pressure medication can result in depression. 

A major cause of depression is stress.  Stress can derive from many different areas in our life.  Some of that stress can even be related to positive events in our lives such as promotions, graduation or moving into a new house.  The unknown is often the root cause of this stress, whether it be positive or negative.  When friends or loved ones come into conflict with an individual – a co-worker or loved one – the result is stress.  There are a great number of people who are stressed from simply trying to perform their jobs to satisfaction and trying to support their families from week to week.  By determining the cause, medical professionals have a much better chance of administering a treatment.  Seek medical help if you or a loved one suffer from depression.
